QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

Global IATF 16949:2016

The global automotive industry faces important challenges, from the rapid growth of the supply base in emerging markets to the need for improved performance, reliability and cost effectiveness. In response to these challenges, the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) agreed to discontinue the joint development of ISO/TS 16949, the well-known technical specification for automotive sector quality management systems.

On 1st October IATF 16949:2016 was released and the main implications of this new direction are:

  • ISO/TS 16949:2009 certificates will not be valid after September 14, 2018
  • After October 1st 2017 no audits (initial, surveillance, recertification or transfer) will be conducted to ISO/TS 1 6949:2009
  • From October 1, 2017 to September 14, 2018 organisations shall transition within their current ISO/TS 16949:2009 audit cycle, i.e. at the next planned surveillance or re-certification audit
  • Organisations that are already certified to ISO/TS 16949:2009 will need to complete a successful transition audit, which includes a positive VETO certification decision, by September 14, 2018

Key changes to the IATF 16949:2016 standard include:

  • Incorporation of some of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customer specific requirements (CSRs) to reduce the complexity and number of CSRs for suppliers to implement, and for certification bodies (CB) to audit
  • Inclusion of requirements for safety related parts and processes
  • Enhancement of product traceability requirements
  • Inclusion of requirements for products with embedded software
  • Inclusion of a warranty management process addressing no trouble found (NTF) and the use of automotive industry guidance
  • Clarification of sub-tier supplier management and development requirements
  • Addition of corporate responsibility requirements
  • Adoption of Annex SL High Level Structure, the same structure used when developing ISO 9001:2015

To support organisations through the transition we have a series of programs:
